Greg Cruey

Greg Cruey is an educator and journalist. He works as an educational interventionist specializing in disabilities at a small, rural elementary school in Central Appalachia. But he has taught at grade levels from kindergarten to college. At the college level he has worked in financial aid, veterans counseling, grant writing, and English as a second language.

Greg is an Asia buff and avid China watcher who has lived on four continents and in 14 times zones.

As a journalist, Greg has been writing for publication for over 30 years. He was editor-in-chief of his college paper, has written for a couple of small rural weekly papers, and he has worked a beat for a daily paper. Greg's Internet career started here at Suite101. He's been writing and blogging for the Internet since 1996. He has also written for Creative Webblogging and for About.com (a division of the NY Times Company). He maintains a personal blog.

Greg holds an M.S. in education and technology from Marshall University in Huntington, W.V. He did his undergraduate work in the social sciences at Augusta State University in Augusta, Ga. He studied counseling at University of the Nations in Kona, Hawaii, in a non-degree setting and earned a graduate diploma in general linguistics at the Australian National University in Canberra where he also studied Chinese linguistic issues and the Indonesian language.

Greg has a profound interest in reading issues, particularly dyslexia. He is a member of the International Reading Association.

What exactly is an "educational interventionist?" It is a professional who intervenes when students fall significantly behind (or simply aren't "making it") in a classroom setting. The goal of that kind of intervention is to make it possible for students to continue learning with their peers in a normal classroom environment.

Greg is certified in special education (autism, learning disabilities, emotional & behavioral disorders, mentally impaired), early childhood education (preK-6), middle grades math (4-8), middle grades social studies (4-8), middle grades language arts (4-8), English (6-12), and reading (K-12).
