Suite101.com Contributing Writer
The author of a bunch of books, I generally write about health, aging, New York City, and travel. I hold a masters degree in public health.
A Brooklyn resident for over twenty years, I’ve written three popular guidebooks to this fabulous “outer borough,” and one guidebook to the borough of Queens. I'm proud to say that the guide to Brooklyn, called Brooklyn: The Ultimate Guide to New York’s Most Happening Borough, ran 500 pages and won a bronze award from the American Society of Travel Writers. (All four books published by St. Martin’s Press.)
Mid-career I went back to school and earned an MPH from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.
Books I’ve written covering health, wellness, aging and health care reform include the well-reviewed lifestyle guide, Looking Forward: An Optimist’s Guide to Retirement (Stewart Tabori & Chang, 2004), a popular pamphlet, Boomers Guide to Good Work, about giving back, and, of all things, a dictionary of public health terms dating to the Clinton health reform era, HealthSpeak: Complete Dictionary of America's Health Care System. (Facts on File, 1993). Because the health reform debate is topical again, I hope to revive some of this discussion of what health lingo really means, here on Suite 101.
In the course of my book publishing career, I’ve done book signings at major bookstores in New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Houston, and the Bay area. I have tons of articles online.
I’m a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, the American Public Health Association and American Society on Aging, not to mention various local Brooklyn organizations including the crunchy, much-publicized Park Slope Food Coop.
I’m an avid traveler, having lived in London for four years. I hold an MA in Social Science from the University of Chicago. I've just begun to launch a communications consulting firm for mission driven organizations, called Basic Premise Communications; stay tuned.
