Biography
Udhaya Kulandaivelu spent the first 17 years of his life in Chennai, India, and the rest of his life in America. From his teens, Udhaya has written stories, fiction, and poems. Over the years, that passion has branched into novels, screenplays, song lyrics, editorials, and articles. For his Masters’ thesis, instead of writing an academic paper, Udhaya wrote a novel with various characters from diverse ethnic, cultural, and racial backgrounds telling their stories in their own point of view. The thesis was enthusiastically received by the faculty at San Jose State University and paved the way for Udhaya’s creative journey.
Being a perfect cross-breed of the East and West and being a slavish student of the books and movies of both, Udhaya inherited the literary traditions of both India and the U.S. Udhaya functions like an American freespirit but still plumbs the outsider’s perspective when a fresh approach is needed. Having lived in India during his formative years and then in Minnesota, Maryland, New Jersey, and California, and working in restaurants, retail sales, and the Computer Industry, Udhaya was exposed to a wealth of characters, personalities, and cliques. His experiences in two different cultures and the observations and insight they provide inform his writing constantly. With an ever percolating mind full of ideas, and an uncanny knack for discerning human behavior and communication, Udhaya infuses his writing with wicked humor, undying passion, palpable drama, and poignant themes.
