Christine Lightfoot
Writer
After completing my degree and a postgraduate teaching course my first job was as a secondary school music teacher. However, after reaching the position of head of a music department, I decided to have a complete change and started work as a technical writer for Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). Following a move to Hewlett Packard I have since combined being a mother with working as a freelance writer and editor for a wide range of national and international companies writing technical manuals, user guides, training courses, marketing and publicity literature and content for websites. Since the beginning of 2008 I have also become a writing partner with an organisation which helps people to write their own life stories. As a writing partner I help the client to organise and record their memories, advise them on the content and structure of their book and assist with the writing if necessary. We then produce high-quality leather bound, hardback or paperback books.
In addition to my work as a writer I have also been involved in a number of IT training projects. In a recent project I provided IT and internet training for people who felt excluded from the more traditional IT training courses and so I had the opportunity not only to work with homeless people, travellers, recovering drug addicts and alcoholics but also with older people who had missed out on the growth of computers in the workplace and were very apprehensive about getting started. As a result of this work I was interviewed and featured in local television and radio programmes and in the local press.
My most recent work has been managing and promoting three community websites. In this role I worked with a wide range of very interesting people and helped many local community groups and organisations set up their own websites.
Outside work I am a very enthusiastic musician and I regularly play in classical concerts and folk events in and around Oxford.
