Writer
Annie Bennett in Madrid, Mark Holness

People are always asking me why I specialise in writing about Spain. I just say there is so much to write about, with so many new things happening all the time. Trying to get to grips with the culture, language, traditions, food and wine of Spain is endlessly fascinating and intriguing, and makes for a very interesting and varied life. Having lived in Madrid for 10 years, I know spend half the year in Barcelona and a lot of time travelling around the country. I report on what is happening and what is coming up, whether exhibitions, new hotels, great restaurants, emerging wine-producing regions and festivals, as well as things I come across on my travels that I think just might interest Suite101 readers and help them get more out of their trips. Although Spain is so well known, vast tracts of it are still well off the beaten track,, and I love exploring areas where you hardly see another car, never mind any other tourists.

I studied Spanish and German in London, specialising in translation, and have translated several books on Spanish art, food and culture. I have written National Geographic Traveler Madrid, Blue Guide Madrid, Blue Guide Barcelona and Art Shop Eat Barcelona. I contribute regularly to The Sunday Telegraph and other UK national newspapers and magazines. I have been winner and runner-up of the Spain Travel Writer of the Year award, and have also won awards from the Valencia and Gibraltar tourist boards.
