I'm a freelance writer on the front edge of my career, I like to say. Not that I don't have the experience to back it up. I'm building on five years as the editor/staff writer of The Citizen-Journal in Boyne City, Michigan, a content-heavy weekly community newspaper. As sole editorial staff member, I was steeped daily in every element of creating a newspaper, from editorial planning to writing, copyediting to proofreading, page design to execution of layout, photography to public relations. Phew! I've also made some forays into freelance writing, contributing parenting columns and feature pieces to Petoskey Area Parenting Magazine in northern Michigan, and a monthly "things to do" feature in The Homesteader in Florida. Did I mention my education background? In central Florida, I spent two years as an elementary school teacher, providing special education services in an inclusion setting, at a Title 1 school with a 70 percent low income population. As my principal tried to tell me before I started, the hardest job I'll ever have. Or love. I was Rookie Teacher of the Year in 2007, which was truly an honor. Rounding things out: a BA in psychology from Michigan State University, and a significant amount of coursework towards a BA in English with a minor in writing from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point. I'm also a mom, and my main goal in life is to cultivate a fabulous and fulfilling writing and publishing career while hanging out with my fabulous and fulfilling children as much as humanly possible.
