Alex Hoffman is a graduate of the University of Kansas' journalism school whose credits include Midwest Commercial Journal, Lawrence Magazine, KC Magazine and Shawnee Magazine. His wide interests are reflected in all of his pieces for Suite101, which offer analyses on such topics as classical music, rock music, pop culture and sports.

As a classical music essayist, his highly specific interest in 20th- and 21st-century American composers is rooted in his passion for orchestral music. His emphasis lies in American symphonists such as Paul Creston, William Schuman, Vincent Persichetti, Howard Hanson, Peter Mennin, David Diamond and Robert Ward, as well as the music of Copland, Bernstein and Barber. Although not limited to this list, he is also an admirer of Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Ravel, Debussy, Hindemith, Honegger, Bartok and John Adams, among other 19th- and 20th-century composers.

When he's not writing, Alex is a devoted fan of his Kansas Jayhawks, a sucker for Jim and Pam on "The Office," a believer in "Friday Night Lights," an 80s music connoisseur, an avid golfer and still pumped over Jeanine's "So You Think You Can Dance" Season 5 win.
