Catherine Garretson-Bilnoski has been playfully described by her husband as "having a tendency to over-research", which she denies by saying "there's no such thing as too much research". She believes that learning happens every day, not only through formal education. Because of this, she decided not to specialize in any field while attending college as a culinary arts major. She believes that service to one's community betters the self and the community, and donates time as a volunteer fire fighter. Because she is largely an autodidact (self taught) she has learned to seek enriching and educational experiences in her everyday life. This has led her to work in several fields including food service, childcare, customer service, finance, art, and management. Throughout her life communication has been a common theme. She has taken opportunities to communicate with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, which has taught her that "the lessons of the human condition don't vary, even while the situations do." Catherine's interests are as diverse as she is. Culinary artistry is a way of life for her, and has opened doors into organic gardening, brewing, canning, and raising poultry. Science is another passion, specifically the fields of medicine, biology, ecology and psychology. She began reading at a young age, and devours books at the rate of 2-3 each week, from all genres. Her interest in the arts she claims to have inherited from her family; and has been involved in theatre, music, fine arts, crafts, and writing since childhood. Over the past year she has entered several recipe design contests, and worked as a PA on the independent film short shadowbox. Her recently discovered gluten/casein allergy has inspired her to create recipes and tools for fellow sufferers, and is the subject of her blog. |
