Aimi Persand - Profile
I am a freelance writer whose interests include literature, travelling and history, although not necessarily in that order. When I am not desperately trying to finish my first novel, (I say desperately because I have reached the self doubt phase and am trying to fight my way through it), I am usually spending my time trying to escape to either warmer climates or into the past. I am sure there is a therapy session in there somewhere.
Whilst at college, I successfully set up and ran the college magazine. When I was studying for my creative writing qualification, some of my work was published in the Adult Learning magazine. I have an HNC in English Literature and English Language- this means I am not the most practical of people but I can "discuss" the hind legs off a donkey!
Two years ago, I was lucky enough to be a volunteer for the first ever Manchester Literary Festival. I met some amazing writers and poets from all over the world as well as from here in the U.K. The person who I admired and enjoyed the most was an Indian poet named Arundhathi Subramaniam. Her poetry is about her personal experiences living in contemporary India- the meeting of ancient spiritual ideology and western capitalism. She attended a British school and as a result her lifestyle was more westernised than that of her parents. Most of the audience expected her to be quite spiritual or, at least be knowledgeable about the Hindu religion but she was not and made no apologies for this! I really identified with this as my father is Mauritian yet I was born and raised in England and I'm about as British as they come! I've been known to stand in a queue for hours rather than "push in front of someone else"
I love to learn, especially about the past. I find the ancient civilisations fascinating and am always surprised by how advanced they were, from the Mayans to the Egyptians. I am a firm believer of the saying "knowledge is power" and believe we should be open minded to new ideas and new beliefs, even if they challenge our most entrenched ideals. This is reflected in my writing and I am looking forward to sharing my work with you.
