Nur Aida Abdul Rahim

Contributing Writer

Aida is a true citizen of the world. Having been raised in Malaysia, she completed her undergraduate studies in England and her PhD in the US, both in the fields of Mechanical Engineering. She is now a postdoctoral researcher in Singapore. She is no ordinary mechanical engineer, however. Her graduate research work was carried out in the area of bioengineering, utilizing multiphoton microscopy to monitor protein interactions within living cells, and her current research encompasses areas of liver fibrosis and tissue engineering, microfluidics, and stem cells. The cross-discipline nature of her work enables her to interact with scientists from many different fields, enriching her own scientific understanding in the process.

Being Asian, food is central to her life. Asians love food and love to socialize over food. The diversity of Asian cultures also ensures a limitless supply of gastronomical delights to expound upon.

She is also very interested in the traditional practices society has developed to facilitate a woman’s pregnancy and childbirth processes, and was lucky to have the choice of giving birth within her native community. The marriage of traditional and modern practices in Eastern cultures make for exciting analysis.
