Perry Cuskey - Profile

I was born near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma in January of 1961. I sometimes joke that my Civil War interest was preordained, since I share the same birthday as Stonewall Jackson - January 21st.

I attended high school in a suburb of OKC, graduating in 1979. (Probably to the amazement of some of my teachers.) I have been self-employed for the past several years, and currently run a one-person operation helping business owners and medical professionals obtain financing for their companies and practices.

My interest in the American Civil War dates to the early 1970's, and family visits to my sister's home in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The area is richly steeped in Civil War history and mythology, and it wasn't long before I was hooked.

My next first-hand experience with the war came on a visit to Shiloh National Military Park, also in Tennessee, when I was around 12 or 13. One visit was all it took. To this day, Shiloh remains my favorite park. There is a silent, haunting charm to the place that is difficult to describe. And difficult to forget.

Until a few short years ago I had thought that none of my relatives had taken part in the war. But thanks to the research efforts of my sister, we recently discovered an ancestor who did so. We've learned some about him since then, and hope to learn more as time goes on.

In addition to my interest in the war I also have an incurable bowling affliction. Something about knocking over small, helpless pieces of wood that attracts me for some reason. Other interests include traveling, camping, hiking, attempts at photography, and as a friend of mine likes to point out, an unusual habit of running into trouble around water. (Must be the Aquarian in me.)

I also own two dogs - one Siberian Husky and one Husky/Shepard mix - who both enjoy going for rides, tearing around the house, and stealing food at every opportunity. They're also pretty good at yowling.
