Born and raised in New England - 37 years of it in Vermont and Maine - I've lived and worked for the past 16 years from the island of Vinalhaven, off the coast of Maine.
The family influences that mattered were my father's brief stint in the merchant marine and his life long affection for reading, writing and speaking. Born and raised in England, my mother became the only member of her family to emigrate to the US. From both came a myriad of interests, capacities and capabilities.
My professional interests have cross-fertilized each other: university historian and administrator, public humanities presenter and programmer, editor of British automobile enthusiast publications, reviewer and journalist, commercial fisherman, caretaker and bartender. I love to juggle and balance them all the time.
My historical research and writing, my fascination with popular culture, my work in France and Great Britain, my research into community in northern New England, my delight in the persistent demands of hard work - all contribute to my interest as a writer and editor.
I also enjoy living simply and through my own efforts, for better of for worse. That's not always the most popular stance to take these days, but it's highly entertaining and enlightening.
