Susan Wessling - Profile

I am an award-winning columnist and editor who has over a decade of full-time journalism experience, including nine years as an editor. I left my full-time job in May of this year to pursue freelancing full-time. In the past, I have freelanced to supplement my income and also worked full-time freelancing in 1996. Writing is not only a source of income for me, but it is my passion as well.

One of my other big passions in life is sports. I am an avid fan of most sports and I am a former collegiate athlete. I also spent many years as a sports journalist. My sports columns have been recognized by the National Newspaper Association (1994) and by the New England Press Association (1992) as I won first place for best sports columns in those associations' respective annual writing contests. The sports pages of the Daily Item, the newspaper I worked for as the sports editor from 1990-96, were recognized by NNA in 1994 as one of the best nationally. In 1985, under my direction, the Clark University student newspaper's sport section was presented with the Clark Media Award for outstanding coverage of Clark University sports. It is the only time the student newspaper has won that award.

Along with my sports journalism experience, I have significant experience as a general reporter. I was the editor-in-chief of a weekly newspaper in Central Massachusetts from 1987-1990. Prior to that I was a feature, news, business and sports reporter for four weekly newspapers in Massachusetts. I still feel my diverse background is an asset as I can write on a variety of topics with ease.

I am a 1985 graduate of Clark University where I played four years of collegiate varsity basketball and was a team captain as a senior. I was a three-year starter and played on teams that won two NCAA Northeast Regional titles and twice went to the NCAA Division 3 Final Four. My athletic achievements and experiences are some of my fondest memories. These experiences taught me the importance of teamwork, commitment, hard work and dedication. I believe those experiences also taught me how to work well under pressure.

Health and fitness are still important to me today. I am an active person who leads a healthy lifestyle. My other interests include writing (of course), literature, my family and my dog (a lovable 11-year-old Irish Setter named Benjamin).

I am a regular contributor to On Call magazine, a subsidiary of the Boston Globe for healthcare professionals, and I write reviews for Britannica Internet Guide, Encyclopaedia Britannica's on-line resource.

I am a Worcester resident. I grew up in Winthrop, Massachusetts where you could literally walk into Boston. I settled in Worcester after attending college here. It is the second largest city in New England but still has a small- town sense about it, which I enjoy. In just 15 minutes you can be in the country as there are many small towns on the outskirts of the city. I spend a lot of time in the area's state parks, walking my Irish Setter and enjoying nature's beauty.
