Harold Friend: I Write About Baseball, Harold Friend

I became a science teacher because I couldn't throw a curve ball or hit one. On a warm September day in 1951, I came home from school and rushed to the 7" television set to watch "Flash Gordon" on channel 11, only "Flash Gordon" wasn't being shown. There was a baseball game on instead. I became interested and that was it. My existence would never be the same.

A few years ago, I started writing baseball articles for Suite101.com. I have also written for many other sites, including my blog. There are few things more enjoyable than baseball, and there are few things that stir emotions and controversy more than baseball. Despite having followed the game for almost 56 years, I am not a baseball expert. There is NO such thing. It is similar to the definitions of an expert and a generalist.

An expert knows more and more about less and less until she knows everything about nothing.

A generalist knows less and less about more and more until she knows nothing about everything.

Many changes have occurred in the business of baseball over the last few decades. Some of them have been well documented while others have slipped under the radar. The game played today appears to be much like the game of fifty years ago. Don't believe it.
