Katherine Bryant - Profile

The one word that sums me up better than any other would have to be "eclectic." I edit textbooks for a living, but my passions cover everything from astronomy to cooking to crafts to genealogy to history. I live in the Boston area but grew up in Colorado, daughter of a New England father and an Indiana mother. I majored in the history of science in college (and I also have a master's degree in that field), but I studied medieval history, linguistics, journalism, and Welsh, among other things, along the way.

The Internet is a big part of my life. I'm lucky that my job gives me Internet access, though I also have a private connection at home. I've had a home page on the Web since before the Web was hot. In fact, it was my web page that led me to Suite 101 -- my page on the language of flowers inspired Carol Wallace to create the Floral Mystery that's going on over in Virtual Gardening. She kindly dropped me a note to tell me she had featured my site, so I decided to take a look at Suite 101 for myself. It now ranks with other of my favorite sites -- amazon.com (the huge Internet bookstore), the Hollywood Stock Exchange (a game in which movies and movie stars get traded like stocks and bonds), the Metropolitan Opera site, Sky & Telescope Magazine's site, and CDNow, a great online CD store.

My greatest love, though, is and always has been musical theater. I study voice (I waver between being a mezzo-soprano and a contralto), and perform in local amateur productions. Currently, I'm playing Jack's Mother in Sondheim's "Into the Woods." Mostly, though, I do Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. I'm a third-generation G&S lover and performer, following in the able footsteps of my father and grandfather. I love grand opera as well; I remember Saturdays spent surrounded by the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts. I dream of someday singing Carmen or Cenerentola or Prince Orlofsky -- maybe not at the Met, but somewhere!
