Email me

Greetings!

I am currently on sabbatical from teaching ESL (English as a second language). My experience ranges from elementary to adult college courses - all in Israel for the past twelve years. I am currently tutoring small groups.

About Me

What I'm Working On

I currently have a manuscript on "Developing Literacy in K-2 English Language Learners through Collaboration" under discussion with Corwin Press, a K-12 Educator's publisher. This is a growing area of literacy that needs constant research, clarification and exploration in order to help teachers acquire more knowledge and understanding about teaching English language learners (ELLs) in both the mainstream ELL and ESL classrooms.

Finished Projects

Several of my ideas and teaching tips have been accepted by the educational magazine: "The Mailbox." I just had an article published by the Teacher and Principal Quarterly on "Teaching Tips for Lower Performing ESL Junior High School Students." WAHM (Work at Home Mothers) published an article I wrote on read-alouds for their May 2008 online edition. ReadingToday (International Reading Association) just accepted my piece on Bridging Read-Alouds and Early Literacy.

I have also completed a variety of freelance and translation writing projects. Noteworthy clients include: Luftansa, translation for hi-tech markets both in Israel and in the United States.

Education

My undergraduate and graduate degrees are in English Literature (Haifa University). I also have an ESL certificate.

The Cultural Side of Teaching

For me, the new teacher experience began with immersing myself in Israeli culture. I serviced in the Israeli army, ended up living on a kibbutz and married a kibbutz member. Together we have one child. Blogging about my Jewish and Israeli identities helps put the American and Israeli worlds in perspective.

Teaching English learners involves adapting to the cultural sides of teaching in addition to developing an appropriate curriculum for English language learners.
