I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself....
My name is Terrie, I am married to Peter, and we have been blessed with 4 wonderful children, Sarah - 6 years, Lana - 4 years, Brandon - 3 years and Brianna who will be 2 years old on December 19, 1998.
My background includes graduation from college in 1983 with a diploma in Medical Assisting, followed by graduating from college in 1989 with a diploma in Social Services. I have gained experience in the areas of Pharmaceutical Work, Children's Mental Health, working in a group home with Developmentally Delayed Adults, dealing with disorders ranging from deafness to autism, and all the behavioural problems that go with them, including violent outbursts. None of my work experience compares to dealing with our daughter Sarah, who is delayed. She is chronologically 6 years old, but in the mindset of a 3.5 to 5 year old. Even though we are awaiting an official diagnosis, we are certain that she exhibits the signs of Asperger's syndrome, or another form of mild Autism.
Working from home was a decision I made as soon as we found out we were expecting Sarah, and I have never regretted it for one moment. It provides me the opportunity for an income, while having the enjoyment of watching my chidren grow, applauding every milestone they surpass, and being there for them whenever they need me.
My goal as writer for Suite 101 is to provide my readers with relevant information and links to further knowledge about children's disabilities, while providing support and encouragement for parents and families dealing with a child who has a disability. Nobody should ever know the feeling of being alone as they battle the obstacles a disability can bring.
I hope you find my articles and links helpful. I look forward to providing information, corresponding with my readers, and offering a place for parents and families to turn to for support
when faced with caring for a child who has a disability.
Sincerely Yours,
Terrie
