Community Gardening

This article was written as a resource for people wanting to join a community garden, start one, or just simply find out more about the community gardening movement.
Many people say that the community gardening movement started in the 70's. It's roots go back much further though. The victory gardens of Europe during World War I, the plot gardens of the Soviets surrounding the great Russian cities, and the needs of the homeless during the wild west days are the roots of community gardening, but each community garden is unique and has it's own history.
In the early 1970's the community gardening movement took firm root in urban communities, and many of these continue to thrive in such cities as Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Chicago, Indianapolis, Denver, Seattle and Kansas City, Vancouver and Montreal. Following are some links to information on community gardens in various cities. If you have a link to add to this list, please email it to me and I will add it to this list right away.
Whether you are using this list to locate a garden plot in your area, or just browsing, you will see that every community garden is very unique, with it's own purposes and usages. Each garden is a reflection of the neighbourhood it serves, and the community who gardens there.
