September 17, 2009-- News Release: Vancouver, BC Canada
ONLINE PUBLISHER SUITE101.COM GOES GLOBAL WITH LAUNCH OF
WEBSITES AND OFFICES IN SPAIN AND FRANCE

Online magazine that shares revenues with writers becomes the first website of its kind in Spanish and French market, adding to its presence in Germany and North America.

September 17, 2009 (Vancouver, BC, Canada)>> Suite101.com Media Inc. announced its expansion into Spanish and French-language countries this week with the opening of offices in Madrid and Paris, and the launch of online magazines Suite101.net and Suite101.fr.

These websites, with launch events happening in Miami and Madrid this week and in Paris (Sept 21), are the first of their kind for Spanish and French freelance writers. Writers earn dividend-style revenue for their published articles, work with professional editors, and retain all copyright to their work.

“This kind of online revenue-share journalism is a totally new model for writers of these languages,” explains Peter Berger, president and CEO of Suite101.com Media. “Our goal is to become a known outlet for Spanish and French freelance writers as an option alongside writing work at newspapers and magazines. We also want to reach experts who might not consider themselves writers.”

In Madrid, Eva Fontiveros leads Suite101.net as Editor-in-chief with a team of editors in Argentina, Mexico, Spain, the US (Miami), and Venezuela. Jérémy Reboul, is Editor-in-chief of Suite101.fr in Paris working with editors in France.

The Suite101 model is a success in North America where it has operated Suite101.com from Vancouver, British Columbia for over a decade. The English-language site publishes articles by 2,500 freelance writers and gets 15 million visitors a month, most of whom find the site while searching the Internet for information on a specific topic. Today Suite101.com is the fourth most-visited Canadian-owned website (behind the Government of Canada and ahead of CBC.ca) in terms of monthly traffic, which has doubled in each of the past three years. A German-language site launched in 2008 went from zero to one million monthly unique visitors in ten months.

“Looking ahead we see immense growth in this business,” explains Berger. “Basically we create opportunities for writers and experts to write and publish, and we link them to readers who are hungry for reliable, trusted, well-written online articles.”

PART-TIME FREELANCE WRITER SETS A MONTHLY EARNINGS RECORD OF $4,940US
FOR ARTICLES PUBLISHED ON SUITE101.COM

Lena Gott, 29 year-old accountant and stay-at-home mom in North Carolina, surprises herself by earning $4,940 in July and setting a monthly earnings record for online writing site Suite101.com.

September 1, 2009 (Vancouver, BC, Canada)>>  Suite101 Media Inc., the Vancouver-based company behind online magazine Suite101.com, is pleased to congratulate freelance writer Lena Gott on setting a new monthly earnings record for articles published on Suite101.com.

During the month of July, Lena Gott’s articles earned her revenues of $4,940.77US—the most earned by a writer in a one-month period since Suite101.com launched in 1996.

“I can attribute much of my July earnings to my article on the Cash for Clunkers program,” said Gott, who normally earns around $2,000 a month for her articles on Suite101.com. “I strongly believe that writing in article clouds, or webs, and interlinking the related articles results in higher revenue.  For the same amount of work, you get more page views because every article has the ability to drive page views to several related pieces, fulfilling the reader’s search for more information.”

This 29 year-old professional accountant has been writing for Suite101 since 2007. She has published a total of 228 articles on Suite101 as a Feature Writer, most in the Business & Finance section. ”Suite101 is definitely a real part-time job for me. I try to devote at least 15 hours per week to researching and writing articles. I would do more, but I’m a stay-at-home mom and have others jobs as well.  I’m a CPA and teach for Axia College of the University of Phoenix, I also own a jewelry business, Milan Jewelry Design.“

Gott represents many of Suite101’s high-earning writers who combine writing with other jobs or passions. When asked what kind of writer she is, Gott says she thinks of herself as a teacher first: “This is a weird question for me because I never thought I’d be a writer!  I like to write to inform or teach.  I want each of my readers to learn helpful information from my articles, whether it’s important details about new tax law, how to save money, or just where to find a useful family budgeting spreadsheet.”

Suite101.com earns revenue from advertising that appears on each article posted on Suite101.com. Writers earn a share of the revenue from the pages where their articles appear. This “dividend style” of payment continues as long as the articles appear on the site. Suite101 pays writers each month via PayPal. While there is no upper limit to a writer’s earnings, this model means there is also no guaranteed baseline—a fact that can dismay new writers first starting out but that can reward productive writers over time.

WHERE THE ONLINE READERS ARE: THE FIRST INDEX OF CANADA'S TOP 15
MOST-VISITED WEBSITES IS RELEASED TODAY

The first index to look at visitor traffic for Canadian-owned websites shows that “content is king”: Canadian sites that publish original news and articles enjoy the highest traffic.
Where The Online Readers Are, the first readership index of Canadian-owned websites was released today by Suite101.com, the Vancouver-based online magazine.
The Index was created to show which Canadian-owned websites get the most traffic. It also highlights the most popular website “types.” The January index shows that content sites dominate: ten of the fifteen highest traffic, Canadian-owned sites publish news and information.

“There has been a lack of research on Canadian-owned websites and how much traffic they get. Yet the results are surprising,” said Peter Berger, CEO of Suite101.com Media. “The top Canadian owned sites aren’t shopping or search sites—they’re content sites.”

Pam Horan, President of the New York based Online Publishers Association, comments: “This is consistent with what we find in the US through our Internet Activity Index, where we track where people spend time online.  In January the majority of consumers spent time with Content (44%) followed next by Communications (26%).  We see this trend continuing, as it has for the five years we have been tracking time spent online.”

This finding also points to the appetite for professionally created content, rather than for opinion sites that may not be professionally edited. “Consumers ascribe different value to different types of content,” Horan notes. “Professionally created content commands significant trust which is reflected in the increased traffic to many of the newspaper online sites which continue to grow significantly. Consumers need quality content to stay informed on news events and to help make buying decisions.”

Index Findings:
  • Content is king in Canada: ten of the top fifteen Canadian-owned sites are content sites
  • Only two content sites in the top fifteen are true “online only” publications without a print or broadcast outlet:  Suite101.com and Canoe.ca
  • The top Canadian content sites publish material that has been overseen by editorial staff; they are not blog or public opinion sites (though may include these elements).
  • Most Canadian content sites are general interest sites for a range of visitors; only two focus on specific topics or content areas (sports, weather).
  • Eight of the ten content sites are secondary outlets: the site publishes information that was first designed for release by newspaper, broadcast, or other outlet.
  • There are no Canadian-owned search engines ranked in the top fifteen.
  • There are no Canadian-owned shopping sites and only two commerce sites in the top fifteen.
  • The most visited Canadian-owned site is MetroLyrics, a searchable database of song lyrics. The second most visited Canadian-owned site is dating site Plenty of Fish.
  • The top two sites are located in Vancouver, are free for users, and receive significant visitor traffic from the US.
Index Criteria
Companies must be Canadian-owned. Sites with a US parent company, such as Google.ca or Amazon.ca, would not be eligible. Site categories are based on those provided by the Online Publishers Association:
  1. Content:  sites that provide original news, information and entertainment.
  2. Commerce: sites that are designed for shopping online.
  3. Communication: sites that facilitate the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information directly between individuals or groups of individuals.
  4. Community: sites that combine user-generated content with communications to foster relationships between members and groups of members. (eg. Facebook)
  5. Search: sites that scan the web to provide results based on specific criteria from user-generated requests. (eg. Google)
*The report is based on Alexa.com rankings for website traffic, using three-month averages. Alexa is an accepted system that analyzes web traffic using online toolbars and data sources. VETERAN JOURNALIST AND NEW MEDIA PIONEER COLIN SMITH JOINS SUITE101.COM
AS NEW EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Smith looks forward to leading Suite101 writers and editors into the next period of explosive growth at this online publisher.

Suite101.com Media Inc., the Vancouver-based company behind online magazines Suite101.com and Suite101.de, announced today that Colin Smith has joined the company as Editor-in-Chief for the English-language Suite101.com site.

Smith, a respected veteran print journalist and modern media pioneer joins the company after a multifaceted career in writing, editing and publishing. Born in B.C. and raised in Ontario, Smith cut his teeth as a freelance writer in the '80s and '90s, covering music and popular culture beats for magazines/newspapers across North America. In 1994, he was co-publisher and managing editor of Euphony.com, the groundbreaking weekly web magazine based in Vancouver that garnered a million visitors a month. (Euphony employed writers, critics, editors, columnists, illustrators, cartoonists, photographers, satirists and new media artists producing an award-winning web magazine. The company also promoted live music events and literary cabarets, one of which was recorded for CD-ROM.)

After being wooed back to traditional media as a news editor for the canada.com network, CanWest appointed Smith as lead web producer to manage Driving.ca, the company’s national automotive portal. Prior to joining Suite101, Smith was charged with modernizing internal communication strategies for HSBC Bank North America, overseeing an international team of web editors and producers. Smith’s education includes Print Journalism and Political Science from Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology and Wilfred Laurier University respectively. Colin is also a founding director at Vancouver’s Theatre Conspiracy (www.conspiracy.ca).

At Suite101.com, Smith joins a team of 20 employees working at head office in Vancouver’s Yaletown area. He is responsible for leading the editorial team, building on the successes of 2008 and ensuring Suite101.com writers maintain high standards of quality during a period of explosive growth.

“We wanted to make sure we found the right person to lead our network of 2,000 writers and we feel that Colin is a great fit,” said Peter Berger, CEO and President of Suite101.com Media Inc. “He brings broad journalism and editing experience, and understands our commitment to creating opportunities for writers, no matter what stage they're at in their freelance writing careers. Colin brings the extreme level of energy needed to lead our .com site, take it to the next level, and multiply the number of great writers who come to write for us."

"This is a fantastic opportunity," said Smith. “It's clear to me why Suite101 has earned such a stellar reputation for publishing quality content by emerging and veteran writers. Everyone - including the writers, the editors, and Suite101 staff around the globe - truly cares about supporting the craft of writing and they respect our readership. I'm honored to join the Suite101.com team and can't wait to get started!"
