ONLINE MAGAZINE SUITE101.COM ATTRACTS 10.4 MILLION UNIQUE VISITORS IN SEPTEMBER: A GROWTH MILESTONE FOR THIS TRUSTED HOW-TO INFORMATION SITE

The number of readers visiting Suite101.com rose dramatically in September drawn by an expanded number of articles, a new easy-to-navigate homepage, and interest from professional journalists seeking new writing outlets.

October 30, 2008 (Vancouver, Canada)>> Suite101.com Media Inc., the company behind online magazine Suite101.com, announced that online traffic to www.suite101.com rose to 10.4 million unique visitors during the month of September.

This rise marks a 113% year-over-year increase in site visitors from September 2007.
“We expected a rise in visitors compared to the summer but had not forecast passing the ten million mark so soon,” said Peter Berger, president and CEO of Suite101. “This is outstanding considering other players are entering this category. It shows two things: the momentum we’ve created from twelve years of publishing great writers, and a shift in what people look for online: less of the personal opinion sites and more reliable, trusted content written by great writers working with professional editors.”

Over the past year the number of articles posted on the site rose from 101,000 to 130,000, with writers adding an average of 1000 new articles each week. Suite101.com has also improved its Alexa ranking from #2,741 in May to #1,907 today. (Alexa rankings reflect the number of users who visit a site. A low number indicates high users and pageviews. In context: Facebook.com is #5, GlobeandMail.com is #2,771. )

A range of factors have led to the rise in traffic at Suite101.com:
  • A new home page design launched in September, making it easier for readers to find editor-selected articles, celebrity writers, and daily thoughts from writers.
  • An increasing number of news media, magazines and publishers are using the site to find experts: Suite101 writers are regularly assigned articles for other publications, book deals, and media interviews based on their writing for Suite101.
  • Over 75% of visitors find the site through search engines while seeking information about a specific topic. In September Suite101 had most of its traffic coming to the site via Google.com, followed by Yahoo.com.
  • Newspapers are reducing staff journalist positions, creating freelancers who are attracted to the “dividend payment” model at Suite101. Suite101 has seen a 40% increase in applications from news professionals who see that Suite101 offers a paid outlet for their work and the freedom to write about chosen topics.

SUITE101.COM IS RECRUITING "HIGH-POTENTAIL" STUDENT WRITERS—WATCH FOR "ENTER CURIOUS" CAMPAIGNS ON CAMPUS

Suite101.com is looking for writers during the month of October. Journalism school students with at least two published articles are encouraged to apply.

Suite101.com, the general-interest online magazine with over ten million monthly readers, launched an on-campus hiring campaign this week for writers at top journalism schools across North America.

“We are looking for students with strong writing skills who have published at least two articles,” explains Richard Wasylynchuk, in charge of writer recruitment at Suite101. “Quite frankly, it’s a great way to get published and be paid every month while earning a degree.”

The hiring campaign involves on campus posters and online ads at top journalism and communications schools. “Get Published, Get Paid, Enter Curious” is the tagline. Qualified students are encouraged to apply at www.suite101.com/curious

The campaign aims to increase the numbers of student writers writing for the site, while identifying early journalistic talent among high-potential student writers who have demonstrated strong writing skills.

Freedom to write what you want…editorial advice if you need it
Writing for online magazines has become popular for students who are time-crunched and cash-starved: online articles are short, averaging 400 words, and writers are paid each month through PayPal. Writers choose the topics they write about, hold copyright to their writing, and work one-on-one with an editor when they need feedback.

Suite101 currently has 1,900 freelance writers. Many use the site to earn part time income while finishing a degree or starting a freelance career. The site also acts as an online portfolio: Suite101 writers are regularly approached by agents and editors to write articles for newspapers and magazines, or with requests to republish their work for payment in other news media. Current writers for the site earn revenues ranging from $10 to $1500 each month, determined by factors such as the number of articles posted and how much traffic they get.

July 9, 2008 - News Release: Berlin, Germany & Vancouver, BC Canada

FOUR MONTHS AFTER THE LAUNCH OF SUITE101.DE:  GERMAN-LANGUAGE ONLINE
MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES EXCEPTIONAL GROWTH

All counts are up beyond first expectations including traffic to the site, number of writers who have joined, and number of articles posted. Suite101.de moves into larger offices in Berlin and hires an associate editor-in-chief.

July 9, 2008 (Berlin, Germany & Vancouver, Canada)>> Suite101.com Media Inc., the company behind online magazines Suite101.com and Suite101.de, announced the first results for the German site www.Suite101.de since launching four months ago.

Over 750,000 unique visitors have come to the online magazine since its February 21st launch. Within four months the site has signed up over 250 writers who have posted 6,000 original articles. It’s a strong start for the German-language site.

“Growth has been more rapid than expected,” said Peter Berger, president and CEO of Suite101.com Media Inc. “Naturally it’s still far away from the eight million monthly visitors we get on the English-language site, but it is remarkable that in such a short time, Suite101.de has attracted a large network of writers and readers. (It’s also remarkable that other news media and publishing houses have taken note, and hired writers based on their Suite101 writing.) Above all, we’re pleased to see that this model—offering freedom for authors combined with editorial support—functions well for German writers too.”

Other site highlights include:
  • As expected, most visitors (over 75%) came through search engines after searching on a topic for which there was an article published on Suite101. (This is similar to the north american site. Most visitors find it through an Internet search.) Search engine traffic to Suite101.de came first from Google.de, followed by Google.com and T-Online.de.

  • In terms of content, Suite101.de writers are covering a huge range of topics. Recent articles include a discussion of Fontane’s earring (by Jan Roloff), at-home exercise tips (Sabrina Sann), reports on where to stay during national soccer championships (Klaus Schwehn). One of the most widely read articles so far covers how to give notice at work (Alexander Benra).

  • Other magazines and publishers are using the site to find writers. Several Suite101.de writers have been assigned articles for other publications based on their writing for Suite101.de

  • Editor-in-chief Dirk Westphal receives over fifty applications each week for Suite101.de from writers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and those living around the world.
Suite101.de now looks ahead to its second phase of growth in German-speaking countries with a new larger office space in Berlin, and the recent hiring of an associate editor.

FIRST-EVER "CANADA START-UP INDEX" NAMES ONLINE MAGAZINE SUITE101.COM
AS THE SECOND MOST VISITED START UP IN CANADA

Suite101.com, the Vancouver-based online magazine with over eight million monthly visitors, is thrilled to hit second position in the first ever Canada Start-up Index.

July 2, 2008 (Vancouver, BC, Canada)>> Suite101.com, the general-interest online magazine with over eight million monthly visitors, has placed second in the first ever Canada Start-Up Index launched this week on TechVibes.com.

The Canada Start-up Index ranks start-up companies based on the average of Alexa and Compete rankings—two systems that analyze Web traffic for millions of consumers through online toolbars and other data sources. The Index is compiled by through Techvibes.com, an online community for technology professionals in Vancouver.

Originally inspired by the Seattle Startup Index, Andrews’ began by ranking tech companies in Vancouver and Toronto and grew the Start Up Index to include seven other cities. In response to national interest Andrews launched the first Canada-wide Index on July 1st, 2008.

Suite101.com joins two other BC-based companies in the top four national rankings:

“It’s great to see how our traffic compares to other Canadian companies,” said Peter Berger, CEO and president of Suite101.com Media Inc. “Online ranking is not a perfect science yet, however if we’re all compared with the same measures, that means something!”

For companies to be considered for the list they must be located in Canada, less than five years old, not a public company and be a tech company (hardware, software, web app/service, or mobile). Full rankings can be viewed here.

According to Andrews and TechVibes: “The Index is intended as a jovial comparison of Canadian companies. Comprehensive traffic data is difficult to obtain, and neither Alexa or Compete’s numbers are perfect; we average them to smooth out bias. Further, web traffic isn’t necessarily a relevant measure of success, nor is it even an indication of having a practical business model. Enjoy, don’t lose sleep or make financial decisions over it.”

QUICK AND DIRTY TIPS FOR WRITERS ON SUITE101.COM

Suite101.com, the general-interest online magazine with over 8 million monthly visitors, features award-winning podcaster and author Mignon Fogarty as the latest Suite101.com Celebrity Writer.

Fogarty, aka Grammar Girl, is best known for her weekly podcasts tackling common writing and punctuation challenges. These popular podcasts reached #2 on iTunes and were the inspiration for her book Quick & Dirty Tips for Better Writing, published by Henry Holt.

“Grammar Girl is a refreshing champion for language-lovers everywhere. Her trademark humour gives writers and readers the straight goods when it comes to crossing ‘T’s and dotting ‘I’s,” said Suite101’s Editor-in-Chief, Joy Gugeler. “With a welcome lack of snobbery she explains grammatical principals and provides memorable examples. Every writer needs a quick refresher when language is always evolving.”

In a Web-exclusive excerpt on Suite101.com Fogarty tackles the subject of how to use “however” in a sentence and challenges the advice given by esteemed grammarians Strunk and White. She also talks with Suite101’s Writing & Publishing Editor Julie Burtinshaw in an exclusive interview about writing techniques and her most preferred punctuation mark: “The interobang. It’s a combination of both the exclamation mark and the question mark. It looks like a p with dot at the bottom. It’s not universally accepted, but it is my favourite.”

Suite101 features Celebrity Writers each month who publish original articles on “burning questions” in their field and take part in interviews offering candid advice to freelance writers.
