When one thinks of political philosophy, one often thinks of arguments about which political party is superior, or the merits or lack of a president or despot, prime minister, or chairperson. Political opinion often reflects political philosophy. Awkward juxtapositions may form, for example, political philosophy and literature.

Political philosophy describes the metaprinciples driving policy and opinion. These philosophical positions include the following: Economic Capitalism, Communism, Socialism, Libertarianism, Fascism, and Anarchism. Types of governing include Democracy, Monarchy, Aristocracy, among others. Political philosophers include Jefferson, Locke, Aristotle, Plato, Marx, Cicero, Rousseau, Hobbes, Voltaire, Mill, Mencius, Lenin, Rawls, Beauvoir, Rand and Machiavelli, among others.
