Ireland's Royal Accommodation: Fit for Kings, Presidents and the Discerning Traveler
There are, of course, lots of castles dotted throughout Ireland that offer fine accommodation. Here are just five of the best: This magnificent castle dates back to 1228 AD. It was originally built as a monastery but today is it a renowned deluxe hotel that has played host to King George and President Reagan. The setting is particularly attractive with the wooded parkland allowing for relaxing walks around the grounds and Lough Corrib lake available for fishing. The castle is most famous for being the backdrop to the John Wayne film, "The Quiet Man." Adare Manor This 5 star manor hotel can boast some fantastic architecture of towers, turrets and intricate stonework. Most fascinating are the unique features like 52 chimneys, 75 fireplaces and 365 leaded glass windows. The castle was built in the mid-1800s on an 850-acre estate with magnificent parkland and gardens. Guests can also enjoy the Robert Trent Jones Sr. golf course. One of the top luxury hotels in Europe, Dromoland dates back to 16th century. Food connoisseurs will love the fact that Egon Ronay (British travel guide) named the dining room here the best restaurant in Ireland. Famous guests here have included The Beatles, Robert Redford and Paul Newman. Kilbrittain This is the oldest habitable castle in Ireland, dating back to 1035. Its past inhabitants have included Irish chieftains and Norman invaders. The situation in beautiful West Cork is particularly nice and you can be assured of warm hospitality in comfortable but luxurious surroundings. Clontarf Castle This 1172 castle is simply steeped in luxury with beautiful en suite rooms and suites that can only be described as royal. Visitors don't have to travel far for their night's entertainment. Start with a quality meal at the Templars Bistro and continue your night at one (or both!) of the aptly named pubs - The Drawbridge and The Knights Bar.
