Sites for the Interim - 2000, Part I

As we enter this très dreary period of awaiting the results of the Tony and (wheeeeeee!) FANY Awards, we battle our ennui by taking a brief look at some new (or previously unmentioned) and interesting theatre websites. (We will be taking a further look at several of these.) Therefore, in alphabetical order:

Broadway.com

Brought to you by the folks at Hollywood.com, this new site seems to be positioning itself to take on the current titans of theatre websites: Playbill On-Line and Theatre.com. The site is packed with multimedia -- lots of Shockwave/Flash and video (in WindowsMedia, RealPlayer, and QuickTime formats). Multimedia serves up promos, commercials, interviews, recordings, etc. The site has your standard theatre news, gossip, interviews, facts and tidbits, polls, calendars. To many people, most importantly, Broadway.com is the latest home of gossip columnist/critic/historian/CD reviewer Ken Mandelbaum.

A number of people have registered difficulty loading the site or have complained about speed issues, but if you've got a fast connection Broadway.com is definitely worth checking out.

Broadway Revisited

A rather minimalist site providing information about Art Hilgart's Broadway Revisited radio show which is broadcast on a number of Public Radio stations and can be heard over the internet at The PublicRadioStation.com. The program features, in the words of the site:

Words and music of the American theater, from Kern to Sondheim.
Some weekly hours revisit a single show; others present variations
on themes or review the work of a particular composer. Art Hilgart
introduces interpretations by original casts and others, old favorites
and the unexpected.

The site provides a number of schedules, "some endorsements," reprints of several articles by Mr. Hilgart previously seen in traditional print media, as well as "information for station managers and program directors." Definitely worth a visit for fans or potential fans.

Broadway Stars.com

A site devoted to gossip, news, tidbits, gossip, promotion, demotion, opinion, and gossip. Their greatest asset -- aside from gossip, that is -- is a listing of the most significant theatre-related news sites as well as a daily roundup of what they consider the most significant news from those sites. They've just opened up shop so you'll find a number of links "under construction," but we look forward to see what they'll be featuring once the plaster dust clears in areas like "Broadway Star's Bios," "Business of Show," "Casting Corner," and "Readings/Workshops."

The site has potential and is worth keeping an eye on. It's worth dropping by on a daily basis just for their highlighted links to that day's news.

Fynsworth Alley

There's pretty much no there there yet, but according to what is there, starting September 1, 2000, this will be the site of former
