Merry Christmas, MU* Enthusiasts (part 1 of 2)

Dragon
So here we are, in the throws of this magical holiday season, when half the world's population gets starry-eyed and nostalgic, filled with Christmas spirit; and the other half turns into raving lunatics, frothing at the mouth and hunting bargains like a starving beast hunts its prey.

Working in retail, I see more of the latter than the average gal.

Still, the fact that I work in a discount store during the weeks before Christmas (like working in a trough at feeding time, folks) hasn't put a damper on my own holiday cheer. In fact, I am feeling more generous and more thankful than I have in many years past. With this in mind, I interrupt your regularly scheduled game reviews, rants and opinions about various issues in the MU* world to bring you a series of holiday-spirit-inspired articles of a personal & MU*-related nature.

Since this season is about a blend of generosity and thankfulness, I'd like to open with my "Christmas Wishlist for the MU* World", and my "Top 10 MU*-Related Reasons to be Thankful" list.

Dina's Christmas Wishlist for the MU* World

1. That everyone, and I mean everyone, would respect copyrighted material. Doing so means much more than just not infringing on copyright or stealing the work of others. It's respecting the hours that the copyright holder has put into creation of the material. It's saying, "Yeah, I know what a b*tch it can be to spend 24 hours staring at a computer screen, writing and debugging code, or coming up with unique descriptions and creative content. I've been through it, and I respect the fact that you've been through it, too." And that when someone gives us free license to use his or her material, we'll do so by the rules, and not alter it, hack it, or claim it as our own. Credit where credit's due. That's my fondest wish.

2. That players of MU*s everywhere would take a moment to step back, evaluate themselves from an OOC perspective, and see whether or not they're really playing these games, or allowing themselves to get entirely too caught up in their IC personas. That is to say, that we would all take a deep breath, relax for a moment, look at the way we react to what happens in our favourite MU*s, and make sure that we take it IC, and not let it get to us OOC. These are games, after all, they are meant to be enjoyment and relaxation...they are not meant to stress us out so much that we have a nervous breakdown in real life (I've known people to whom this has happened-such a pity). It's natural to get attached to your characters in some small OOC way. But when it starts to consume you, when you find that everything that happens IC is upsetting you OOC (and I am no better than the rest on this, I've been guilty of confusing the OOC with the IC from time to time), it's time to deal with it and solidify your boundaries.
