AOL Email - Beginner LessonsAOL has some great features. One of the reasons they a have a subscribership that has hit 133 million* is because those features are also easy to use. One of the easiest features is their email service. It's also one that many parents feel is safest for their kids because it offers parental control settings. (I found the parental control settings to be quite good.) In order to set up an email address for your child you must set up a screen name for them. All AOL ISP users have the screenname as their email address. For example, my old screen name was Lockmama4 and therefore my email address was lockmama4@aol.com. For AOL users sending email to other AOL users all they have to use is the screen name in the address field. In other words if lockmama3@aol.com were sending email to lockmama4@aol.com all that would have to be entered into the address is lockmama4 and their system automatically recognizes it as an AOL account. To set up the email feature simply click on Keyword in the right hand side of the menu bar of the main screen name on your account and then enter screen name. It will bring you to a board and give you the instructions for setting up a new user on your account. It will give you options for what features are allowed on that account. Read through these carefully and then decide which is best for your family. Then just follow the instructions that the AOL system will give you. Once their screen name is established they can log onto their own account. The system will say "welcome" and if their is email in the box it will say "you have mail". The mail box icon on the welcome screen will also have an envelope sticking out of it. To get to that email the easiest way is to find the mail box icon on their welcome screen and click it. Clicking the mail box will open the mail system. Here they will see a screen with three tabs that say New Mail, Old Mail and Sent Mail. It usually opens to the New Mail setting. Here you will see the date on the left, the email address or screen name of the sender and then the subject. To open a specific piece of mail use the mouse to highlight and then click it or click on the Read tab on the bottom left side.
