My Grammie Loves Autumn

Autumn is my all time favorite time of year. The colors of nature, the decorating for Fall Harvest and Halloween, the chance to view animals getting ready for winter, and of course the annual trip to the pumpkin patch farm just for fun, maybe enjoying a hayride or adventure through the corn maze. Another annual fall event is a trip to a craft fair, flea market, or old country antique shop. I share stories about what the items we find were used for in the good old days. Sarah loves to guess what some of the items might have been used for. It is always a bonding experience for us, as Sarah learns more about my childhood, and I tell her with excitement when we sight an old toy, book, or kitchen utensil bringing back many fond memories. Of course we never go away empty handed, we've started a few collections of old bears, books, kitchen ware, and anything we can use in the gardens. Sarah and I continue to garden until the first frost, in late September we planted red and white mums around our flag. We love to transplant flowers, divide and plant bulbs, and prepare the gardens for winter. We rake up piles of leaves to play in, stuff pumpkin bags and finally we blanket our gardens with the remaining leaves. These are a few of my granddaughter Sarah's and my harvest traditions. The decorating has been going on for weeks, our main project has been the pumpkin head scarecrow shown here. Harvey is made from child size overalls and flannel shirt found at our local thrift store for $4.00 and his pumpkin head is a $1.00 nylon pumpkin treats bag. Next we searched Grammie's house for old boots, gloves, bandanas, tube socks, straw hat, a pillow and loads of plastic grocery bags. We covered the pillow with a plastic garbage bag and dressed it in the shirt and overalls. Next we stuffed the shirt sleeves and overall legs with the plastic bags. Then we put a small rock in the bottom of the pumpkin bag and stuffed it full with more plastic bags. The socks and gloves were also stuffed. Large diaper pins were used to attach the gloves for hands, the socks for feet, the pumpkin head with the hat is also pinned on. Finally we sat Harvey in an Adirondack chair and put his boots on. We added a hay bale, pumpkins, a rake, leaves, cider jug and tied the bandana around his neck. Harvey is definitely the main focus of the front of our front yard.
