Abbey Park - An Introduction

There are places of our youth which we never forget. Places that when recalled, bring forth abundant happy memories and a profound sense of belonging. These are the places that never leave us and when we've drifted away from them, the mind has little option but to retain their essence.

Abbey Park is that special place for me. From babyhood to adulthood I secured a piece of happy life, a life which at one time, was almost totally enveloped by this place of green in Leicestershire. No matter where I go in life or whatever troubles ail me, they cannot spoil the recollections I bear. Abbey Park is as much a part of me as the air that I breathe.

It isn't any surprise for you to hear then that I actually believe I own the place! I'm deadly serious! I spent so many years in that park, that I honestly do feel within my heart that it's mine! It is an old friend to me. A friend who will always be there even though I cannot. A friend whom I could not fall out with if I tried, and a friend whom I know will always welcome me home, regardless of the person I am or the person that I have become!

There is so much more to Abbey Park than a childhood dream however. It is so rich in history and yet, despite the historical aspect it has managed to adapt and change to modern times. Over the years the park's role has changed immensely, but even with city life encroaching on it's very corners, it retains a serenity that not even I can explain.

Over the next few weeks, because I really haven't determined how long this will take, I'd really appreciate your company as we tour Abbey Park. We'll be looking at it's history, it's attractions and how the 'City of Leicester Show,' came to be held there. For now however, and of course, if you'll allow me a few indulgences, I'd like to share some of my own personal memories with you. I promise I'll try not to be boring!

I believe the first memory that springs to mind is that of 'feeding the ducks.' That may not sound overly exciting, but to a child who was raised within the confines of a concrete jungle, it was a little piece of Heaven. You see, our home was a small terraced house. One amid many surrounded by factories and busy roads, and to be quite frank, any kind of wildlife was country living at it's finest!
