Review of GenealogyLibrary.com

http://www.genealogylibrary.com

I thought I'd test out GenealogyLibrary.com's membership and see if it held anything of any value for the Irish Researcher. GenealogyLibrary.com is part of Family Tree Maker. It costs about ten dollars per month to use. I had a bit of trouble with it at first but after a while I figured out how to do some productive searches.

The site consists of hundreds of books that are completely indexed into a good search tool. Books and databases are added each day. Type in your family name and a few keywords to narrow your search down and you can get quite lucky. There are a lot of early census records with snapshots of the original documents.

I did a search for my Robert Savage who lived in New York and I came up with this:

  • 1850 Savage, Robert NY JEFFERSON CO. BROWNVILLE
  • 1860 Savage, Thomas NY JEFFERSON CO. BROWNVILLE
  • 1860 Savage, Thomas NY JEFFERSON CO. BROWNVILLE
  • 1860 Savage, Robert NY JEFFERSON CO. BROWNVILLE
  • 1860 Savage, James NY JEFFERSON CO. BROWNVILLE
  • 1860 Savage, James NY JEFFERSON CO. BROWNVILLE

There are many many family histories in book form on the site -- all searchable. Marrage records, Death index, birth records, wills, probate and of course census. Now by looking under the keyword listings I found many Irish family histories. I also found a few books that I haven't seen on other sites. A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland Vol I - IV, Registry of Deeds Dublin Abstracts of Wills Volume I & II, and A Genealogical History of the Milesian Families of Ireland. I thought that cool enough but they also had Irish and Anglo-Irish Landed Gentry. These are important works if you're lucky enough to have family that had a bit of money. Could just help you locate branch or two of your family. I'm not that lucky though.

Another thing they have is the Internet Family Finder. Type in the name you are looking for and you get a list of sites and databases for pay or for free. I typed Peter Moran in the search box and managed to find my own family tree and too many sites to count. There are a lot of search tools they have that are quite useful in addition to this one. It's a free search and you may find something useful. You can find it direct at this URL http://www.familytreemaker.com/iffintro....
