Simple Herb Drying Rack


When an abundance of herb harvests demands more drying space, I go on a house-wide search. I always need more drying space. An important part of growing edible plants is using and preserving them. A drying rack full of herbs represents all of the joy and toil in the garden, a pride of growing, then using your own herbs. This easy to make drying rack not only adds charm and interest to a country kitchen, but serves an important function as well. It's cheap and easy to make, and can be moved to any location or taken down and stored.

Materials:

one dowel, cut to desired length
jute twine
brass cup hooks
optional decorative items (dried flowers)

Directions:

Cut two lengths of twine long enough to tie and hang. Loop one piece twice around one end of the dowel and tie in a knot; repeat on the other end. Turn the dowel to the underside and mark where the cup hooks will go with a pencil. For my drying rack, I used four hooks. Screw the hooks into the dowel so that they hang downward. Tie the two pieces of twine together at the top and decorate with dried flowers if desired.

Variations:

Go rustic: This rack could also be made with a nice twig, some raffia and some copper wire fashioned into hooks. More than likely, this project can be made from objects already found around the house or workshop. Use your imagination!
