The entrance to the Aquarium will be just across the park along the beach. By car, from Kalakaua Avenue to Monserrat. Metered parking is along the perimeter of the Kapiolani Park or free parking is available in the Waikiki Shell parking lot. The Waikiki Aquarium first opened in 1904 as a part of the Honolulu Rapid Transit Authority's efforts to increase ridership along their newly opened Waikiki Trolley line and to serve as a showplace for the fine fish that were a part of the island's waters.Although the old tram stop still stands near the entrance to the Aquarium, this small attraction remains a favorite to many visitors from across the world. The third oldest Aquarium in the United States and relatively small in comparison with these huge aquatic parks, the Waikiki Aquarium makes up in quality where it lacks in size. Once inside the entrance, there are several small galleries. There are fine specimens of the chambered Nautilus, giant clams and Hawaii marine habitats. Also, interesting is the Mahi hatchery and the coral farm. Both are fine examples of where marine research is accomplishing today. Just outside are several pools which encompass "The Edge of the Reef" exhibit. These are replications of several types of Hawaiian shoreline habitats. The colorful fish and sea urchins are just beautiful. The highlight of any Aquarium visit is the Monk Seal tank. These are not just your run of the mill seal life exhibit. These are endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals. Monk seals are protected my law and cannot be approached in the wild. They are also known to be quite agressive and spend much of their time alone. This exhibit is the only place int he entire world where you can observe monk seals up close. What part can I skip on the first visit? The Naupaka exhibit. Is there food? No, but there's a good snack bar just steps away at Queen's Beach Best part of the attraction? Monk seals
