IRISH HAT FOR ST. PADDY'S DAY
I like to make a hat for my son for each major holiday, so this month you get my most recent attempt at a leprechaun hat. It is shorter brimed for spring and you could make it in other colors like pink to make a girls version. It works up quickly for busy parents who still like to make homemade gifts, or "real presents" as my son calls them. MATERIALS: bright green worsted weight yarn 2 oz. I aluminum hook (5.5 mm) scrap black yarn for band DIRECTIONS: Row 1: chain 6 with green and then join with slip stitch to form a ring. Row 2: sc around ring Row 3: 2 single crochet in each Row 4: *1 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat ROw 5: *2 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat Row 6: *3 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat Row 7: *4 sc then 2 sc in next stitich* repeat Row 8: *5 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat Row 9-10: work even around *5 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat. Brim: Row 19: *3 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat Row 20-23: Work even around. Row 24: *5 sc then 2 sc in next stitch* repeat Row 25-26: Work even around. Row 27: sc all around to firm up edge. Band: Chain in black around hat crown. Work double crochet around for two rows. Slip over brim. Tack up sides. To adapt for an adult make the top one increase wider, the crown a couple rows longer and the brim one row longer. Happy St. Patrick's Day!!
