Eating on the Grooming Job - A Review of the Low Carb LifestyleGroomers often find eating a bit of a problem on the job. Whether you work alone or in a bustling salon, there is always a time crunch. I often cram whatever is handy down my throat and keep on plugging. Many pro groomers tend to let healthy eating habits slide, and grab something from the vending machine. Here's a better habit to cultivate - make a bag lunch the night before. Or make a bunch at once and grab them each morning. But what to make? I've found following the high-protein, low carbohydrate diet works best to keep me going, those long days of squirming dogs, phone calls, walk-ins and endless barking. Since carbs tend to make me sleepy, a nice protein lunch (like a tuna fish salad in a low carb burrito wrap), or healthy, convenient snack (like nuts) keeps my energy more steady through the day. When I took the SuiteU course, Living the Low Carb Lifestyle, I expected to gather some easy recipes for eating healthy on the job. What I found was a bit more than I bargained for. This is not the course for beginners looking for information about the typical low carb diet. This is really an advanced course for people who already know something about the popular Atkins or South Beach, or other low-carb diets. The instructor, Sara McGrath, has presented an extremely well-researched and annotated series of eight lesson chapters detailing the Paleo Diet. While I agree with many points in her lessons about eating the same kind of fresh and seasonal foods our ancestors did (it's the kind of diet our bodies are actually adapted to), I did find many suggestions a bit extreme, from my point of view. It's been enough of a challenge for me to replace my carb habits in the first place, so I don't think I am ready to go the further mile, all the way to the Paleo Diet. Once I am an old pro at high protein and low carb, then I can reconsider. However, McGrath's scientific evidence for this diet is soundly documented, and it makes sense that our original diet would be the one our Pleistocene bodies would process best. For groomers struggling with many chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, elevated blood uric acid levels, elevated blood triglycerides, elevated small-dense LDL cholesterol, and reduced HDL cholesterol, I highly recommend this course to help get your body back on track to a healthy direction.
