DMB Fans: "Waiting and Wondering"

Thoughts on the Long-Awaited Fourth Album...

It all started late last year. Rumors began circulating among DMB fans online and in the &quout;real world" that the band was working on a new album. By the beginning of 2000, fans had word from varied reputable sources that we would see a new studio album that spring.

when rumors began circulating that the band was recording and was hoping to release an album in the spring of 2000. Little information came from the band's management and then spring came and went... no new album. Then, Rolling Stone mentioned in issue number 842 that the album would be released in July. Just when we got our hopes up... Suddenly, all of the hype left the new album and of course began surrounding the summer tour.

Finally, before the summer tour was to begin DMB announced that they had entered the recording studio at a secret location in Charllotesville. But along with the good news, came the bad: the album won't be out until the fall... with one consolation: fans would get a sneak preview of the new songs during the summer tour. This was an acceptable pacifier as tapers shared songs like "Bartender" and "Grey Street" with fans all over the Internet. We were appeased... with the hope that we would hear the songs again come fall.

Producer Steve Lillywhite made an announcement at the official site. He said the band would return to the studio after the tour to complete recording and he even released a temporary playlist that of course included many of the new songs from the summer tour as well as a few others that we had not heard. The word then? A Thanksgiving release date... Christmas at the latest...

And then it happened. A very casual statement was made at the official site: "DMB has re-entered the studio with producer Glen Ballard..." What? What happened to Steve Lillywhite? Lillywhite had produced all three of the band's previous albums... now, what other conclusion can we come to than... they fired him. So what about the songs he had worked on? Are they going to be shelved? If not, why are they being reworked by a new producer?

Entertainment Weekly reported in their November 3rd issue that the Lillywhite songs had indeed been "scrapped" and the band is working on all new material with Ballard! Here is a quote from the article:

"The record they decided not to continue was very good, but they wanted to go the next level as songwriters and musicians," says Bruce Flohr, the bands RCA A&R exec."
