Unsolved Crimes: Brantford, Ontario

Mary Hammond[MaryHammond.jpg]

On September 8, 1983 at 3:30am, Mary Emma Hammond left her townhouse on Elgin Street in Brantford, Ontario for an early morning shift at Buns Mastery Bakery, 110 Morton Avenue. Mary had worked at the bakery for approximately one year. Mary's husband offered to drive her to work. She declined his offer. She set out on the 1.5 kilometre walk to her job. She was never seen again.

Mary walked north on Park Road North (now Wayne Gretzky Parkway,) She passed the Massey- Ferguson plant, then cut across the fields and over the railroad tracks at the rear of the bakery property.

At 4am, Mary's husband received a phone call from one of Mary's co-workers. Mary hadn't arrived for her shift. Her footprints were followed to the rear of the Buns Master property and to a point where Mary had cut across the fields. It was there that her footprints disappeared.

The police were called immediately. Items from her lunch - a half-eaten apple, a cup, a dish and one of Mary's white socks were found at the scene. Police also discovered a small amount of blood in the field.

Mary Hammond was 25 years old when she disappeared. She had long, straight hair, reddish brown in colour. She had brown eyes and a fair complexion. She stood 5' 10" tall and weighed 140 lbs.

Mary was last seen wearing a blue, mauve and red lumber jacket, blue jeans, white Adidas running shoes with yellow stripes and a yellow T-shirt.

Police received information that a pick-up truck had been parked at the rear of the Buns Master property at about the time that Mary disappeared. It was also seen driving through the rear lot. It was an older style brown pick-up, possibly a Ford. It had painted bumpers and round headlights.

Even though there was an exhaustive police investigation and the description of the truck was released to the public, it was never found.

What happened to Mary Hammond in the early morning hours of September 8, 1983?
