At SummerSlam on August 15 2010, Kofi Kingston faced Dolph Ziggler (with Vickie Guerrero) in a match for the Intercontinental Championship. Kingston had had multiple reigns with the belt, but Ziggler had only recently just won the Intercontinental title. Ziggler had had a long-running feud with John Morrison over the title back in 2009 but had always come up short. Now he barely had time to enjoy his run with the belt before facing Kingston.

Vickie Guerrero tried to say something to the audience but Kingston’s entrance music interrupted her so that she was not excused. Once the match began Kingston knocked Ziggler to the mat, kicking and stomping on him and knocking him over the top rope. Kingston went to land on top of Ziggler outside the ring but Vickie pulled him out of the way.

When Kofi and Dolph got back inside the ring Ziggler began pummeling him and locked in a submission hold. He choked Kingston over the bottom rope but Kingston fought back with several kicks to Ziggler. Ziggler quickly got him back down though and continued to dominate the match, getting Kingston in a chinlock.

Ziggler gave him an elbow to the head and continued the chinlock. He tried to get Kingston in a sleeper but Kofi fought out with hits to the gut. Ziggler missed a landing on Kingston in the corner, and Kingston used his advantage to hit Ziggler with hits, a dropkick and the Boom Drop.

Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler Ends in No Contest Due to Interference from The Nexus

There were several near-falls and Kingston went for Trouble in Paradise but missed. Ziggler hooked in a sleeperhold. Before Kingston could tap or fight out, however, The Nexus suddenly swarmed the ring and attacked Ziggler and Kingston. Ziggler escaped but Kingston fought back. Nexus quickly overwhelmed him with stomps and punches. Wade Barrett gave Kingston a fireman’s slam.

Barrett got on the microphone and declared that what they had done to Kingston was merely a taste of what they had in store for Team WWE on that night. Barrett said it didn’t matter whether Team WWE could find a seventh member for their group because there was no way they could remain a cohesive unit that was actually able to fight the Nexus.

Barrett said that the Nexus was united in a common purpose to destroy the WWE, and recited the team’s slogan: if you’re not Nexus, you’re against us. Since no winner of the match was declared, the match between Ziggler and Kingston for the Intercontinental Championship ended in a no contest.
