Daiso California LL issued a recall on its children's coin purses and jewelry. The kids' products were found to contain dangerous levels of lead.

On July 1, 2010, Daiso California LLC recalled some of its children's products. Additional product testing confirmed the presence of lead in the company's coin purses and kids' jewelry. To warn consumers of the potential for lead exposure, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also issued a product report.

Children's Coin Purses and Jewelry Recalled by Daiso California

The kids' products listed under the recall were the Children's Coin Purse, colorful necklaces, and colorful earring accessories. The children's items were sold at Daiso stores located in California and Washington. The purses and jewelry were produced from May 2009 to December 2009. The kids' products sold for about $1.50.

The children's coin purses were designed with rainbow stripes. The words, "The Coin Purse" were printed on the product tag located inside the purse. "Mobile Case Coin Purse" was also printed on the tag.

The recalled jewelry included necklaces and earrings, sold separately. The necklaces and earrings were designed with pearl-like decorations. Each item had different color pearls in blue, pink, red, yellow, or white. On the jewelry's tag was listed "Product for Daiso Japan."

Defects in Coin Purses and Jewelry for Kids

Based on information released by Daiso California LLC, no reports of injury or incident from the use of the product were received. The results of lead exposure are often delayed from the initial point of contact. Because of test results, Daiso recalled the kids' products to reduce the risk of lead poisoning.

The zippers on the coin purses were found to contain high amounts of lead. The closing mechanisms on the kids’ jewelry were also found to contain high lead levels. Lead exposure can cause life-long health issues for adults and hinder development in children.

Individuals standing or sitting near a product with the heavy metal can inhale lead in the air. Lead can also be ingested if an item is placed in the mouth. Low lead levels over an extended period of time can damage the kidneys and brain. Lead exposure in children is linked to lower I.Q. scores and increased periods of maladaptive behaviors.

Actions to Take Following Recall of Kids’ Products From Daiso California

The coin purses and jewelry are unsafe and should be removed from children as soon as possible. Keeping the contaminated item in the household but stopping a child from using the product is not enough to eliminate the health risks. The items can be returned to Daiso for a full refund or discarded.

Consumers may contact the company at (888) 580-8841 between the hours of 9:30am and 6:30pm, Monday through Friday for more recall information. They can also visit the Daiso website to browse other items available from the company or to gain information about the product refund.
