The Deadliest Catch on Discovery Channel returned to cable television for it's sixth season on Tuesday 13, 2010 to record ratings, according to an April 15, 2010 press release from Discovery Channel. The Deadliest Catch is a documentary series that follows crab fishing boats and the adventurous crab fisherman as they travel the high seas.
One of the stars of Deadliest Catch is the late Captain Phil Harris, of the Cornelia Marie, who was recently discussed on the CNN interview show, Larry King Live. Captain Phil Harris passed away earlier in 2010 but is still seen in new season six episodes, which were filmed prior to his death.
Deadliest Catch
The men of Deadliest Catch are engaged in a lucrative, but dangerous, occupation. The crab fishermen travel the waters of dangerous high seas for months at a time. Weather conditions are often brutal and tough to endure. It is a job for the rugged, as the men work in all kinds of weather, including frigid temperatures, high winds and dangerous storms. During season six the boats are out of the Bering Sea, where the crab fisherman search for crab.
Captain Harris was in charge of the Cornelia Marie, one of five ships followed on Deadliest Catch. The other ships on Deadliest Catch include Northwestern with Captain Sig Hansen, Time Bandit with Captains Johnathan and Andy Hillstand, Wizard with Captain Keith Colburn and Kodiak with Captain Wild Bill Wichnowski.
Captain Phil Harris and the Cornelia Marie
Captain Phil Harris was a star of the documentary series Deadliest Catch, a popular Discovery Channel series about the dangerous occupation of crab catching in the high seas. The gruff captain passed away following a stroke in Alaska, but continues to be seen in The Deadliest Catch, as episodes for the current season were filmed prior to his death.
On January 29, 2010, while in St Paul, Alaska; Harris was at work on the Cornelia Marie when he suffered a stoke. The boat's engineer, Steve Ward, found Captain Harris on the floor of the stateroom. Harris was flown to Anchorage, where doctors tried to repair the damage to his brain, but he passed away on February 11, 2010.
Deadliest Catch Captains Talk About Captain Phil Harris on CNN Larry King Live
In an April 15, 2010 interview with CNN host Larry King, Captain Hansen said about Harris,
'You know, the thing about Phil is what you see is what you get. He never held back. But he would have been a good poker player, because he kept those cards close to his chest. You could try to read through the lines. He was good at fibbing. He knew what he was doing. '
Harris's two sons, Josh and Jake were deckhands on the Cornelia Marie. 'When Larry King asked how the family is doing after Harris' death, Captain J. Hillstrand replied, They're getting through it. The kids, it really hit it hard when we buried him. I could see on the limo ride back to the hotel he sort of slumped. That was Josh.'
Larry King asked how the producers of Deadliest Catch handled the death of the popular captain, and A. Hilstrand said, ' I was still out fishing when Phil died. The rest of the guys were back. I think they handled it well from what I saw on the first episode. They tried to be respectful. He was a big character on the show.
The crew of Cornelia Marie includes Harris' two sons, Josh and Jake Harris, Engineer Steve Ward, Freddy Maugatai and Ryan Simpson.
