Mycology

Mycology, the study of fungi, is a relatively recent discipline and as such, mycologists have to date identified only 5% of the estimated 1.5 million species of fungi thought to exist. Many of the species that have been listed have been found to be beneficial to humans.

Moulds such as Penicillium, for instance, are used to produce antibiotics and other drugs, while yeasts are instrumental in the manufacture of a variety of foods. Soil fungi are also important decomposers, playing a major role in the carbon cycle.

Fungal diseases in humans include tinea and thrush, while fungal plant diseases have baffled plant pathologists for decades. The Mycology section of Suite 101 covers the diversity of this fascinating kingdom and addresses the many effects fungi have on their surroundings.
