Modern Chinese Dynasties

The dynasty system ended in China in 1911 with the abdication of the young emperor, Pu Yi. China experienced major upheavels throughout the rest of the 20th century: civil wars, an invasion by Japan, becoming a Communist nation, the cultural revolution and the 1989 student revolt at Tiananmen Square.

In recent decades, China follows a government system which it describes as communism with socialist characteristics, though many would note the country is becoming quite capitalistic. The world's most populous country is turning into a major economic and political force on the global stage.
