Medical Ethics

An ancient Hippocratic aphorism asserts that medicine involves the physician, the disease, and the patient--a statement just as true now as it was in ancient Greece.

Medical ethics has emerged as a contemporary concern because modern biomedical science has made the physician-patient relationship problematic. Is it ethical to withhold treatment from a control group in a clinical trial? How do we conduct stem cell research given the religious objections? Is access to health care a universal right? How far can the state curtail individual liberties to protect the public health?

Older issues like the patients right to know and whether medical care goes against religious beliefs are also ethical subjects for discussion.
