South Dakota might seem an unusual place for information on the Civil War, but no matter. This is another great list of resources.


The American Civil War Homepage
This is another very good, comprehensive web site, with links to a large number of war-related resources around the Internet.


Causes of the Civil War
Jim Epperson has put together a gold mine of primary documents relating to the secession crisis. Speeches, letters, declarations of causes, and more. A must read for anyone interested in why the war came about.


Civil War Artillery Sites
A very good web site for anyone interested in learning more about Civil War artillery. Includes a detailed list of surviving artillery pieces now located at the various national parks.


Civil War Medicine
This site contains a list of interesting articles on various aspects of medical care during the war. Subjects included are Civil War nurses, Confederate Medical Department, the U.S. Sanitary Commission, and more.


Signal Corps and United States Military Telegraph
Run by Signal Corps reenactors from the Ohio Valley Civil War Association, this informative site covers an important but overlooked aspect of the war years.


The Naval War
A good site containing information on the Union and Confederate navies. Articles include an overview of naval warfare during the Civil War, the birth of the ironclads, the blockade, organization of the two navies, and other aspects of the war on water.


The Official Records of the American Civil War
This is a searchable database of the Official Records. Perhaps not quite as good as having the printed version or the CD, but if you don't have access to either of those options, this online version is worth a look.

This is how a military park web site should be done. A comprehensive look at the campaign itself is only the beginning of the great information you'll find here.


Gettysburg Discussion Group
This outstanding web site has an amazing amount of information, including a number of articles and primary documents. If you have an interest in anything relating to Gettysburg, you'll want to visit this site.

Women of the American Civil War
This site includes biographies and first-person accounts of several well known and lesser-known women from the war. Also of interest are the 1864 diary entries of 10-year-old Carrie Berry, an eyewitness to the siege and fall of Atlanta.

Jews in the Civil War
A remarkably comprehensive web site filled with information about the role of Jewish people in both the Union and the Confederacy.


United States Colored Troops in the Civil War
A site dedicated to information about the vital role played by black soldiers in the Civil War. Includes a large number of helpful links.


The Irish Volunteers
Here you will find information about the contribution of America's Irish soldiers, with a focus on the Army of the Potomac's legendary Irish Brigade.


Ethnic Composition of Civil War Forces
This site contains informative articles on some of the various ethnic groups that made up the Union and Confederate forces during the war.

Abraham Lincoln Research Site
Run by a retired American history teacher, this impressive web site - actually several sites - contains a remarkable amount of information about the man who became our 16th president. If you want to learn more about Abraham Lincoln, pay this site a visit.


The Longstreet Chronicles
An exceptional, well-balanced site on one of the Confederacy's most controversial generals. A large number of primary documents written by those who knew and worked with Old Pete is also a big plus.


Winfield Scott Hancock
A web site dedicated to the Union officer known as "The Superb." Information includes a biography of Hancock, his official reports, a "superb" image gallery, his 1880 bid for the presidency, and a good deal more.


Ulysses S. Grant Homepage
One of the most informative sites about Grant anywhere online. Outstanding information. Issues involving their discussion board are the only thing keeping this site from what would otherwise be a five-star rating.


Civil War Biographies
Although not about a specific person, this site does contain a list of short biographies for a number of Civil War personalities. Good place to get some basic information on someone you may be wondering about.

On the Trail of Our Ancestors
This is a very good place to begin the search for information on your Civil War ancestor. Very helpful information, as well as links to other sites of value.


American Civil War Research Database
This site claims to be "the largest, most in-depth and fully searchable database of United States Civil War soldiers and events." Annual membership is $25, but you can try a free demo before deciding if you want to join. There is also a $10 "Visitors Pass" available.


Union Army Regimental History Index
Links to regimental histories for every state that supplied troops to the Union cause. The gentleman who put together this site as well as the next two below did a tremendous job.


Confederate Regimental History Links
Links to regimental histories of the Confederate units. The information here isn't quite as extensive, largely due to the fact that there are not as many Confederate records. All the same, this is a very valuable research site.


Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System
This site allows you, free of charge, to enter information about a person or regiment from the war, and quickly retrieve some very basic information about their service record.

Music


Poetry & Music of the War Between the States
In addition to providing the words to a large number of poems and songs from the war, this wonderful site also allows you to listen to the music. (Once you pick a song, click on the little music symbol you'll see at the top.)

Civil War Preservation Trust
The CWPT is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Civil War battlefields that are threatened with development. Annual membership is $35, and includes a subscription to the organization’s quarterly magazine, Hallowed Ground.


Civil War Album.com
From the well-known to the obscure, you'll find hundreds of modern-day photographs of various Civil War battlefields on this great site. Well organized and easy to navigate.


Uncle Tom's Cabin & American Culture
A very unique site about one of the most important literary works in American history. Includes the entire text of the book, original 19th Century reviews, 3-D samples of various editions, and more. Definitely worth a look.


The Civil War News
The online version of the popular offline newspaper. Contains information on preservation issues and other 'current events' issues related to the war. You can also request a free sample of the offline paper, and/or subscribe for $29.49 per year.


Mathew Brady's Portraits
Part of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, this is a very interesting site on famous Civil War photographer Mathew Brady. The site includes photos, a biography of Brady himself, and a very helpful glossary. There is also an excellent four-part article explaining how Civil War photographs were created.


Civil War Traveler
A great place to start planning an Eastern Theater Civil War trip. Includes information on Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

If a certain war-related word has you a little puzzled, this is a good place to turn. Scroll down to the middle of the page to see the definitions. The only drawback is the lack of spacing between terms.
