This excellent resource guide is an introduction to the vast collection housed in the Library of Congress. Categorized into four areas, the collection includes books, photographs, music, and film depicting the 500-year history of African Americans.
American Slave Narratives--An Online Anthology
A collection of oral histories by African Americans describing their experiences and memories of bondage and freedom. Includes an index and some sound "bites" of the actual interviews. Also provides a listing of other resources and links. A terrific resource.
Footsteps
Award-winning magazine of African-American history for young readers 8-14. Published bimonthly, each issue focuses on a particular theme with articles and activities. Recent issues have featured Sally Hemings, the Negro Baseball League and Blacks in Whaling. Excellent resource for kids and adults.
Harlem 1900-1940: An African American Community
Online exhibit by the Schomberg Center Research Center, part of the New York Public Library System. Provides a wonderful overview of New York City's Harlem neighborhood. Exhibit includes photos, timeline, additional resources, teacher resources and a searchable database.
Lest We Forget: The Untold History of America
A wonderful and diverse collection of links to a variety of topics on black history. Resources include African Americans in the military, frontier life, genealogy, civil rights, religious life, and culture. The site is overseen by Bennie J. McRae, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Papers Project
From Stanford University, this site provides a thorough and extensive list of resources to learn about the life and career of Martin Luther King, Jr. Includes texts of speeches and sermons, King's autobiography, biography, papers, a chronology, list of other links, and articles. An excellent site. Will answer e-mailed research requests by mail only.
Negro League Baseball Online
Learn more about the history of the Negro leagues, the players, and their contributions to the game of baseball. Features include articles, profiles of teams and players, a newsletter, and discussions. Terrific to visit whether you are a fan of the game or not.
The Underground Railroad
This interactive site from National Geographic presents the story of the Underground Railroad in an informative and interesting manner. Viewers are taken along on an "escape route" to get a sense of just how dangerous this undertaking was and what slave endured in order to be free. Includes a special area for kids and classroom sources.

Black Archives of Mid-America
A collection of photographic images, pamphlets, newspapers, and other primary sources documenting African-American life in the Kansas City area. Age of Imperialism

American Memory Collection
A wonderful collection of twenty online exhibits from the Library of Congress. These exhibits do an amazing job of describing different aspects of the American experience through texts, photographs, prints, film, and sound recordings. Future exhibits are planned so check back.

Tales of the Early Republic
From the webmaster Hal Morris: "Tales of the Early Republic is a organized collection of essays, original sources, and reference material about a part of what is called the Early American Republic. The United States Civil War Center
This site done by Louisiana State University seeks to promote the study of the Civil War by making available all appropriate private and public data on the Internet regarding the Civil War. Subjects are broken down into categories such as slavery or battles, making searching a bit easier. An excellent resource.
The White House Historical Association
What is the history of the White House? This is the site to check. Provides historical facts and learning resources for grades K-12. A real treasure.
