Dreams & the Subconscious

Lesson 4: Common Dream Scenarios

Common Dream Situations III

Being Pregnant/Giving Birth: Pregnancy in dreams means new growth, new potential within the dreamer. New projects, new goals, new attitudes, new ideals, new ways of thinking and feeling are growing in the unconscious and need to be nurtured and protected just as any new embryo or young child must be. If you dream of giving birth, or of someone giving birth, ask who is giving birth and where is the birth taking place. In Mythology, Zeus gives birth to Athena who rises full-grown from his head. So Athena would represent a new feminine form, an intellectual form that carries more of the masculine or yang energy than the yin.

So where the birth takes place gives you a clue to where new growth is taking place. Children and babies in dreams indicate new potential in its various stages of evolution. If a new talent is emerging, give it time without judgment of the final product. Don’t share it at first with anyone because it is very fragile at that stage. You don’t express the talent only if it is a great talent in the eyes of the world, you express the talent because it is an important part of yourself and must be developed and used.

Death/End of the World: Death dreams rarely mean physical death. Death/End of the World dreams do often occur in people who are very sick, but they occur equally as often in people who are well. They frequently occur in people who are leaving a job, who are divorcing, or in children who are leaving home for the first time. They mean that some part of life as you have known it is changing. The cycle of life is birth – death – rebirth. If the new is to come, if good change is to occur, the old must die – old beliefs, old attitudes, old ways of responding. Pay attention to what is dying in the dream and the environment of the death. If you wake with a sense of fear, know that the ego will often fear change in the psyche, especially if the ego is accustomed to feeling it must be in control of all aspects of life. Know that in dreams, after death comes rebirth.

Dreams of Finding and Losing Treasure: If you find money in a dream, think of what money means. It can be seen as energy, power in the outer world, and feelings of worth. Treasure in dreams often represents the Self itself. In fairy tales, it is the innocent who finds the treasure and this is a good image of how we can best approach working with a dream of found treasure. It is the pure heart, not chaste but free from ego domination, that finds its way to the authentic self. Sometimes a dragon or demon guards the treasure which shows us that we must conquer our ego drives in order to gain the pearl of true Self. When we dream of losing a treasure, it may be that we have placed a barrier between ourselves and inner authenticity or it may simply mean that the Self has evolved and we must now seek it in its new form. In the dream you may dig deep to find the treasure and your dream is telling you that you must take some time for self examination and exploration.
