Lesson 2: The Writing Process

Editing

Now is the time to take a good look at your work and make corrections to those pesky spelling and grammatical errors. When you edit, or proofread, you are looking to make changes in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar, and sentence structure.

As in revising, use a different colored pen or pencil and make changes right on your draft. This is the stage when your dictionary and thesaurus will come in handy.

Here are a few tips to find those errors:

1. Read your story backwards - from the end to the beginning. That way you will only be looking at the actual words, and not get "confused" by the meaning.

2. Read one sentence at a time and ask yourself if it makes sense.

3. Look for those capital letters and punctuation marks in each sentence.

4. Circle words you are uncertain about and look them all up at once - don't stop to look each one up as you find it.

5. Use an editing checklist. You can find one here: http://www.suite101.com/files/topics/197... or create your own here: http://pblchecklist.4teachers.org/checkl...
