Lesson 5: More Kinds of Writing

Write a 'How To'

Writing instructions on how to do something is an example of expository writing, and a great way to practice this skill.

Choose a task that you do often. Making your bed, making a sandwich, or how to walk to your friend's house are a few examples.

Now, brainstorm a list of all of the steps you need to follow. Think about every thing you need to do and go back to add steps that you may have skipped.

When you are done, write the steps neatly in order. To test your accurateness, ask a family member to follow your instructions exactly as you wrote them to see if they can perform your task. If they have trouble, you may need to rethink your steps!!
