Saving Money & Wasting Less
Lesson 2: Let's go shopping
Lesson questions
- Next time you're in a supermarket, take special note of the way the aisles are organised, the colours used in packaging, and where the cheaper brands are located on the shelves. Does your local supermarket regularly re-organise the shelves so you have to spend more time in there to find the things you want?
- What are your thoughts on retail therapy? Do you enjoy shopping? If so, what exactly is it about shopping that you enjoy? What subconscious need could shopping be filling?
- Give yourself a treat that does not involve shopping.
- Check your local area for bartering systems such as LETS. Would you use a bartering system if one is available? How could it save you money? What could you offer in order to earn barter currency?
- Think of some ways you can put the four Rs into practice in your own everyday life.
- If you have the book Voluntary Simplicity by Duane Elgin, read Chapter Two about people living a simpler life. What it would mean to you to simplify your life? How would it feel to stop chasing money and possessions, and trying to keep up with those around you? How would it feel to live on less?
