Saving Money & Wasting Less

Lesson 1: Starting out

Lesson questions

  1. Analyse at least one advertisement in any medium and ask yourself who the ad is aimed at, how it makes you feel, what doubts or fears it is aiming at. What are the subliminal messages it is giving you? If the ad makes you want to buy the product - why?
  2. If you are in a shopping centre, or mall, or supermarket this week take notice of the sounds around you. Was there music playing? What kind of music? How did it make you feel? What other noises/sounds were there? What psychological effect could all this sound have on your subconscious?
  3. Think about how you feel about money. Does it seem real to you? (If you're often paying by plastic card it may not.) How do you feel if you receive an unexpected sum? How do you feel if it's hard to pay bills?
  4. Did you turn off the TV this week? How did it make you feel? If you couldn't bring yourself to have it turned off even for one day, why not? Television has enormous power in the lives of people in today's Western society. Is it a good thing or a bad thing overall? Why?
  5. What does the term voluntary simplicity mean to you, and how is it different from frugality? Post your thoughts.
