The second film was always going to be the poor relation of the trilogy. The quality of Fellowship meant that Tolkien fans weren’t going to hunt Peter Jackson down in bloodthirsty revenge – but also meant that expectations were high. Add that to the difficulties of weaving three plots together, all the nonsense with Faramir and no Shelob, and there was bound to be trouble...
