Travel Brochures A great way to review the story and think about the setting is to make travel brochures for some of the many places Milo and Tock visited. Here's a list of places to use: Expectations Doldrums Dictionopolis Point of View Illusions Reality Valley of Sound Island of Conclusions Digitopolis Infinity Mountains of Ignorance Castle in the Air Follow these steps for some great travel brochures: 1. Choose your favorite place that Milo and Tock visited in the story. 2. Write a descriptive paragraph about the place you've chosen. List at least 5 interesting things about that place. Use your book to research and brainstorm ideas. 3. Now, using markers, crayons, and poster board or construction paper, design a poster advertising the place you have chosen as a travel destination. Use words and pictures to show that your place is a great place to visit. Writing a Persuasive Paragraph The Phantom Tollbooth provides several instances where two sides of an issue are presented. Chapters 10 and 11 paint pictures of worlds without color and worlds with out sound. Much of the story also contrasts the world of words with the world of numbers. Practice persuasive writing skills while you review these key concepts. Choose one set of ideas from this list: color or sound, numbers or words. Next, compare the two ideas in your pair: sound versus color or words versus numbers. Now, choose one of these statements and write a paragraph telling why you think the statement is right. A world without color is better than a world without sound. A world without sound is better than a world without color. Words are more important than numbers. Numbers are more important than words. Write a Fantasy Using what you've learned about fantasy from this story, write your own fantasy. It can be another story about Milo, or you might want to be the character in your own story.
