Chapter Summaries

In these last chapters, Milo completes his mission to rescue Rhyme and Reason from the Castle in the Air.

First, Milo, Tock and the Humbug must face several obstacles. They meet the Terrible Trivium, a demon who tries to make them do many unimportant things just to waste time. But Milo discovers that the Trivium is just a small, pathetic-looking animal. Once Milo discovers this, the Trivium isn't scary anymore, so he just wanders off and the travelers continue on their way.

Next they come upon the Gelatinous Giant. He tells them that he is afraid of everything, especially ideas. Milo uses his box of words to scare the giant away.

Finally, after meeting the Senses Taker, the three finally rescue the Princesses from the Castle in the Air. They face a horde of demons, but are finally rescued by the armies of Wisdom led by King Azaz and the Mathemagician.

After a great celebration, the Princesses begin to restore order and Milo heads home a changed boy.

The next day at school Milo has many plans for more trips through the Tollbooth, but when he gets home, he discovers that the tollbooth is gone. In its place is a note "FOR MILO, WHO KNOWS THE WAY." The note explains that there are many more boys and girls who need the tollbooth, but because of the lessons he has learned, Milo can explore more wonderful lands without it. And so he does.
