Lesson 3: Guided Reading: Chapters 2-4

This course is designed around a schedule of reading assignments that will let you read the entire book over the course of six days. This schedule requires reading about 40-50 pages each night. If you find this is too much for you, feel free to read fewer chapters each night, but remember that it will take you longer to read that way.

There is also a short writing activity for each assignment called a Do Now. These are to get you thinking about what you have just read. You will find a Do Now at the beginning of each lesson.

Think about the Do Now writing prompt and jot down a few sentences about it in your journal. Talk to your parents about what you've just read if they are reading the story along with you.

In this lesson we will look at chapters 2 through 4. They are: Beyond Expectations, Welcome to Dictionopolis, and Confusion in the Marketplace. If you haven't read these chapters, please do so now before continuing with this lesson.

Do Now for Chapters 2-4

How did Milo decide where to go on his journey? Where was it? What kind of place do you think it will be?

Who are the Lethargarians? Describe their life.

Chapter Summaries

In these three chapters, Milo has traveled quite a distance and has arrived in Dictionopolis.

The first person he meets isThe Whether Man in the land of Expectations. He learns that he is on the right road to Dictionopolis, since the Whether Man tells him that there is no wrong road to Dictionopolis. He travels "Beyond Expectations" and enters The Doldrums where he meets the Lethargarians and Tock, the Watch Dog.

While in the Doldrums, Milo and his car stop moving and Milo becomes more and more drowsy. To get going again, Tock gets Milo to start thinking, and the car starts moving again, and they continue on their journey to Dictionopolis.

When they get to Dictionopolis, Tock and Milo discover that it is market day - and what are they selling? Many words and letters! They meet five advisers to the king, who all speak in synonyms.

In the marketplace, they sample many words and letters. They also meet The Spelling Bee who likes to spell all of the words he says. They all get into trouble when The Spelling Bee meets the Humbug. The two start a fight, and all of the market stalls collapse, spilling many of the words and letters.
